How To Recover Files Hidden By Virus On Removable Devices

Whenever your files suddenly get hidden or turn into shortcuts on your removable devices (USB drives), it’s obviously caused by a virus. Those files are created to deceive you into clicking those links created. This does not mean your files have been deleted or damaged. The files are just being hidden. If you check the properties of the drive, you’ll see the flash drive is still occupied.
Trying to view hidden files might not help you here because the virus hides the files from even the Windows explorer. To reveal or recover your files in this case, you’ll need to run a little command. But first, SCAN AND REMOVE the virus on your PC. Run a boot scan if necessary. Then follow these steps:

  • Press Windows + R to bring out the run program and type cmd OR press / click the Windows button and type cmd (Windows 7),
  • In the cmd screen, you’ll see a directory in this format C:Usersusername>
  • On the command line, after the > symbol, type the Drive letter e.g. H: and press the Enter key to go to the next line,
  • On the new line, type attrib -s -h /s /d *.*
  • You should now have something like this below;
attrib -s -h /s /d *.*
  • Press Enter.
Now you should see all your files revealed in the USB drive.
I hereby advise you to backup / copy your files to another directory just in case. The virus that hid your files might not be on your computer, but on another computer on which you have used your USB drive.

To avoid such infection again, I recommend vaccinating your USB drive
